Windscreen replacement for your Peugeot 406

The Peugeot 406 came on the market in 1995, but it was only after the 1999 facelift that the model became really interesting for car enthusiasts. If the windscreen of your Peugeot 406 needs to be replaced, it doesn't matter which of the versions you have. With us you will find a new windscreen for € 269 that is suitable for the models that were produced before and after 1999.

Before we look at the possibilities of the windscreen replacement for your Peugeot 406, we look back at the history of this special model. Why were fewer than 60,000 copies of the 406 sold in the Netherlands and why did the top model fail?

The Peugeot 406: more competition than ever for PSA

The Peugeot models are popular in the Netherlands. French soundness and a certain degree of comfort are clearly popular with Dutch motorists. The models from the 300-series are often (rightly) regarded as competitors of the Volkswagen Golf. But with the 400-series Peugeot entered the D-segment and there are many more competitors than the Golf.

The Peugeot 406 was allowed to show the PSA
muscle balls against competitors like the Ford Mondeo, the Volkswagen Passat, the Renault Laguna and of course the Opel Vectra. As the successor of the Peugeot 405, it had to beat the sales figures of more than 80,000 cars on Dutch soil, but it would fail completely. The Peugeot 406 was sold less than 60,000 times in the Netherlands.

The Peugeot 406 for the facelift

In 1995, the Peugeot 406 was marketed by PSA. There was immediately a lot of criticism on the outdated seats (hardly adjustable in height or tilting) and the appearance of the 406 was also a bit boring. The range of motors didn't surprise the car world either. The first versions were equipped with a 1.8 or 2.0 litre petrol or a 1.9 or 2.1 litre diesel. All models were manual at first.

Because this was also criticised a lot, Peugeot expanded the range of engines relatively quickly and also introduced models with automatic transmission on the market. But there were no real successes.

The Peugeot 406 after the facelift (1999-2004)

It is only when we look at the facelift that we see why more than 1.7 million copies of the Peugeot 406 have been produced and why this model is still in demand on the second-hand market. The models were given a much more stylish finish after 1999, with the entire front of the car being revised. But that wasn't the most important thing.

What was particularly good was that the safety of the car was much better and that the seats could finally be tilted and adjusted in height. PSA finally saw that comfort starts with a pleasant posture behind the wheel. The engine range was also adapted. For example, the 2.2 16v petrol engine saw the light of day, which we would later see in the Peugeot 607.

The Peugeot 406 2.2 Sport version: what went wrong?

The Peugeot 406 2.2 Sport version was to be the top model in the series, but here the French missed out. The entire Peugeot 406 line is known for its affordability with excellent quality and comfort. PSA decided to use the same strategy when making the sporty model. The top model had to stay around € 20,000 and therefore compromises were made.

These compromises led to software errors in the first versions of the cars. The 2.2 litre 160 hp engine with 217 Nm of torque wouldn't start when the engine was warm. This model came standard with front and rear ventilated disc brakes, 16 inch tyres and an unladen weight of only 1490 kilos. But a top speed of 218 kilometres per hour is not practical when the road holding of the car is awful because the chassis makes sporty driving impossible.

Although Peugeot clearly wanted to give the impression that it was a sporty car in the 2002 advertisement below, few people will see a sports car in the Peugeot 2.2 Sport, which thus became a flop.

When should the Peugeot 406 windscreen be replaced?

With its low price and low fuel consumption, this Peugeot model is still very popular, although there is maintenance on the cars, often using cheaper materials. You can easily go to the after market for that. Even if you have window damage in the windscreen.

But when is the glass damage really reason to replace the car window immediately? According to the guidelines of the Dutch national road traffic authority (RDW):

  • With an asterisk or chip that is larger than 20 millimetres in the driver's field of vision
  • In the event of a branched crack in the driver's field of vision

This car window damage makes sure that the driver does not have a good overview on the road. The window damage distracts and ensures that sunlight or the light from the headlights of oncoming vehicles is reflected in an unpredictable way. This can blind you as a driver.

If you have an occasion in mind or if the windscreen of your current Peugeot 406 needs to be replaced, you can also go to the after market. You can easily and cheaply order your car windows online.

What are the advantages of an after market windscreen for my Peugeot 406?

  1. Lower prices than branded windows and second-hand car windows with brand logo
  2. Easy to order from home
  3. Installation within 3 days by certified fitting partners
  4. Four-year warranty on all new car windows
  5. Can also be ordered without fitting or delivery

Can I replace the windscreen of my Peugeot 406 myself?

There is no law that prohibits you from replacing the windscreen of your Peugeot 406 yourself, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. If a windscreen is not correctly fitted, it can come off during abrupt braking. A windscreen can also leak if it is not fitted correctly.

Are you a car mechanic or do you know someone who has a lot of experience in replacing windscreens? Then you can also order the new windscreens without installation. In all other cases, you can opt for our service: car window replacement at your home or at another location is no problem at all for our certified fitting partners. This can be arranged within three working days. If you are in a hurry, this can also be arranged within 24 hours for a fee.
