A second-hand car window: is it a good option for your car?

Do you need to replace the windscreen of your car and want to make sure you don't pay too much? Then a second-hand car window seems a good option, because the price of a 2nd hand windscreen is lower than new automotive glass at your brand dealer. But is this the full story? We would like to take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of used car windows and then explain how you can choose even cheaper car windows, often with a considerably better price-quality ratio!

Is it possible to have a second-hand car window installed in my car?

When there are used car windows that are made for the type of car you have, you can choose second-hand automotive glass for your car. It is very important that you first take a good look at the condition of the glass. Pay particular attention to damage, such as pits or scratches in the glass. Especially with a used windscreen, it is good to look at automotive glass damage in the driver's field of vision.

Assessing 2nd hand car windows is very important. There are few sellers of 2nd hand automotive glass that give a guarantee on the windows. In concrete terms, this means that any glass damage after payment is your problem. A crack in the windscreen will in most cases cause problems. This can be in the short term, for example during the car window replacement. Or in the longer term, of course, when the crack gets bigger or moisture reaches the coating in the windscreen, after which it will oxidise and form a white haze in the window.

In the video below you can see an (extreme) case of a cracked windscreen while driving in Sweden:

What are other disadvantages of used car windows?

In addition to the lack of guarantee and certainty (after all, the automotive glass is not new), things often go wrong when installing 2nd hand car windows. Fitting car windows yourself is a good option when it comes to a side window and if you are handy, but then these used side windows for the car should be in optimal condition.

But a rear or front window replacement is a completely different story. Fitting a new windscreen yourself is strongly discouraged. Installing a used windscreen yourself is often even more difficult because the windows aren't completely clean and can't be transported as easily as well packed new automotive glass. All this means that choosing second-hand car windows isn't as attractive as it seems, unless there are special advantages to this automotive glass.

What are the advantages of 2nd hand car windows then?

Actually, there is only one advantage to 2nd hand car windows. These are often cheap car windows. The price of a used windscreen, for example, is soon lower than the price your Mercedes, Audi or Volkswagen dealer charges. And of course saving some extra money is always a nice bonus.

But what if we tell you that you can save a lot more on automotive glass? Do you have a crack in the windscreen and do you need to replace it? Then don't automatically choose second-hand glass, but look at the price of after market automotive glass! That's where the real savings lie, without compromises.

After market automotive glass versus second-hand car windows: what's better?

After market automotive glass is not used automotive glass: we only sell new windscreens. But there is a considerable chance that the price of our new car windows will be lower than that of the used car windows you are looking for. This has to do with one small difference between after market automotive glass and your dealer's brand glass: the logo.

Second-hand car windows are cheaper than new brand glass. But thanks to the high new price of brand glass, the prices of used car windows are still relatively high compared to the new price of after market automotive glass.

That's why customers of Autoglas Concurrent often have better experiences with buying new automotive glass than people who buy used automotive glass. This has mainly to do with:

  1. The lower price of after market automotive glass
  2. The ease and quality of installation of automotive glass by certified fitting partners
  3. Easily finding a suitable car window for any type of car in our extensive database
  4. The advantage of friendly customer service and guarantee on car windows

Is that second-hand car window a strong option for your car?

Choosing a second-hand car window is an option, but it is not the best choice when you want the price/quality ratio, where you are mainly looking for cheap automotive glass.

Choosing after market car windows is a much better option, because the price of this glass is lower than many second-hand car windows and there is a guarantee on the glass.

In addition, our certified fitting partners can install the new car window within three working days, so you don't even have to look at it. If you can fit car windows yourself, you can also simply order new after market car windows from us without fitting. You can have them delivered or simply pick them up yourself to save even more on costs.
