After a collision, burglary or storm, the risk of damage to the car is high. The paint and the automotive glass are very vulnerable. When you need a rear window replacement because of damage, there are several options. If you want to replace the rear window cheaply, then there are fewer possibilities and it becomes just a little more difficult. Unless you know exactly where to look and what to look for. What is important when it comes to the rear window replacement and how can a car window replacement be done as cheaply as possible without compromising on quality?

Damage to the rear window: should it be replaced?

Most rear windows are made of tempered glass. This is special glass that has been heated and cooled down at an accelerated rate, making it stronger than non-tempered glass. This has another advantage. When damage occurs to the rear window, a tempered rear window will always break down into thousands of tiny pieces so that there are no large sharp shards that pose a danger. That is why this glass is also called safety glass. A small damage to the rear window can already cause the entire window to break, as can be seen in this video:

However, there are also rear windows that are made of laminated glass. If a laminated rear window is damaged, it is not necessarily necessary to replace the rear window immediately. A laminated rear window consists of two layers of glass with a layer of PVB film,
and does not break apart when it is damaged. However, there are relatively few car models in Europe with a layered rear window. Well-known examples of cars with a layered rear window include the Mercedes S-class and the Audi A8. Damage to a layered rear window does not cause the entire rear window to shatter, but it is still wise to consider a rear window replacement. If there is a coating between the layers, automotive glass damage can cause moisture to get in, after which the rear window still needs to be replaced because a white-grey haze is caused by oxidation.

What does it cost to replace a rear window?

The cost of a rear window replacement depends on the car you have. Among other things, the colour of the rear window determines the cost of replacing a rear window, as well as whether or not you have a heating. If, for example, you have a Volkswagen Passat B8 Variant, the rear window replacement costs € 329 including installation by our certified partners. If you drive a Peugeot 107, a rear window can already be replaced by experts for € 379 including all the costs involved. Can I replace my rear window myself?

With us you can order all windscreens, side windows and rear windows for all car models, even the rubbers and the frames. You can get started right away, because you can also order only the rear window from us. Without installation and therefore without extra costs. To replace the rear window yourself, you need at least the following:

  1. Enough space to work dry;
  2. The right tools for the rear window replacement;
  3. Enough time to work carefully;
  4. Knowledge of dismantling and fitting car windows.

A car window replacement is not always a job you can't do yourself. However, replacing the side windows of a car is considerably easier than a rear window or windscreen replacement. Side windows are considerably more convenient and installing these windows is easier. For windscreens in particular, we recommend to have the fitting done by the expert, but replacing rear windows is also a job for professionals. Incorrect installation can cause the rear window to come loose. Moisture can also enter the car through the window, damaging the interior and electronics. Then the costs are much higher than when you choose to have the rear window replaced.

Ordering a new rear window via the internet

A rear window replacement starts with choosing a new rear window. Again, there are several options. Do you want to save on costs, but not sacrifice on quality because it is about the lifespan of your car? Then a second-hand car window is not an option. If this automotive glass is older or damaged during disassembly, this usually only causes problems and replacing the rear window takes more time and more money. There is a better way to save on costs. Because the cost of a rear window replacement at your brand dealer consists for the most part of the price for the rear window with brand logo.

This brand logo does nothing for you or your car. When you choose after market rear windows, you get automotive glass of exactly the same quality. Often these car windows are even made in the same factories as the branded car windows. But precisely because of the lack of the brand logo, this automotive glass is much cheaper, so the costs of replacing the rear window are much lower. This is practical when the automotive glass needs to be replaced by quality glass, but you don't want to pay too much for the new windows.
