The Peugeot 607 was produced from 1999 to 2011. The model didn't show huge sales figures, but this can be explained by the fact that this is a higher middle class. The introduction of the Peugeot 607 was bizarre. Martin Alloiteau, PR-chef for the European market, announced the upper middle class and immediately added that the car didn't perform optimally at high speed. Just before the introduction this was still to be worked on. If PSA did not solve the problems in time, production would be suspended for a number of months.
What exactly was the situation like? A few days before the announcement of the model, the car magazines Auto Plus and L'Auto-Journal received a sample of the Peugeot 607 for testing. During an evasive manoeuvre at high speed, the test drivers lost control of the steering wheel because the long and heavy rear of the car turned out not to be controllable. The media took this up and the Peugeot 607 was immediately the most talked-about car in France. Even before the first model was made!
It was immediately clear that Peugeot had taken the 2800 millimetre wheelbase of the Peugeot 605 with it to the new 607, which would finally see the light of day in 1999, after the problems with the rear had been solved. The basic version was initially a 4-cylinder with 160 hp. The more interesting option was the Peugeot 607 2.2 HDI with a particle filter (also called a soot filter). This filter gets full after about 500 kilometers, but the car itself empties the filter by increasing the temperature to 450 degrees. Because the engine itself sends glycerine towards the particle filter, the ignition temperature is lowered to 450 degrees (instead of 550 degrees). All emissions during combustion are harmless.
The Peugeot 607 not only took over the platform of the 605. The enormous problems followed meekly. The Peugeot 607 was equipped with a rain sensor, climate control, cruise control and electrically operated seats. And with several models there were problems with the electronics.

The Peugeot 607 has two batteries. When driving much shorter distances, the (hidden) battery in the back of the Peugeot 607 becomes empty. Do you notice that the car suddenly starts difficult? Then drive a longer distance to charge the rear battery.
In most V6 models the ignition coils were replaced because the quality was too poor. If the engine stutters or fails, check the ignition coils.
For many models, this system has been replaced within the warranty period. You can find out in your car's service book whether the window mechanism has been replaced on your car or an occasion that you have in mind.
With the Peugeot 607, Peugeot entered a new market. After the Peugeot 605 it was even more luxurious to gain a foothold in the higher D-segment. As with the Peugeot 605, PSA did not succeed with the 607. There were simply too many problems in the announcement phase, the model was placed too high in the market where strong competitors like Volvo, BMW and Audi don't want to give in and where the average driver doesn't really expect a Peugeot model. This makes the Peugeot 607 a type that fits in the list between Fiat Croma, Opel Omega, Renault Vel Satis and the Volvo S80, but never really broke through in Europe.
Nevertheless, the Peugeot 607 is not necessarily a bad car. As TopGear proves below, it's a car that you can also enjoy in the corners.
