Windscreen replacement for your Peugeot J5

The Peugeot J5 is a special appearance. It was never a sales success, because a stronger alternative was introduced to the market at the same time. If the windscreen of your Peugeot J5 needs to be replaced, you can do it yourself if you are a little handy. With the attractive prices for the Peugeot J5 windscreens on the after market, you can limit the costs to the essentials.

Before we show you how you can replace the windscreen of your Peugeot J5 yourself, we'll take a brief look at this model and the competitor that has emerged from the cooperation itself.

The Peugeot J5: attractive as a motorhome

The Peugeot J5 is a very attractive model because it can easily be converted into a motorhome. But the success was still not there. The sales numbers within France were reasonable, but there were no great successes abroad.

Was this the fault of Peugeot itself because there were problems with the model? Not at all. It had to do with the competitor, who had more similarities than differences with the J5. The Fiat Ducato was the result of the collaboration with Peugeot, which also saw the light of day for the J5.

But at that time Fiat had a much better dealer network and more budget, so that the most important markets were pushed directly towards the Fiat Ducato. Other models born of these collaborations:

  1. The Citroën C25
  2. The Talbot Express
  3. The Fiat Talento
  4. The Alfa Romeo AR6

The production started in 1981 and continued until 1993. The Peugeot J5 had the same engines as the Citroën C25, but also that model would lose out to the Fiat Ducato which would hijack most of the market.

A facelift and then the successor

In 1991 the facelift came for the Peugeot J5, which is simply called the Peugeot J5 2. A new front was placed on the J5, including new headlights. As sales were not yet increasing, Peugeot decided to stop production and introduce the Peugeot Boxer as a successor in 1994. This is completely based on the second generation of the Fiat Ducato.

Especially a 'project'

The Peugeot J5 has become especially popular because you could do anything with it. Converting to a motorhome is the favourite option, but Peugeot itself also had spectacular ideas that were shown to the public in a special advertisement:

On YouTube there are many projects that have been done with a Peugeot J5 and even on forums ideas are shared. What is clear is that there are few original J5 models to be found, because that was not what the consumer wanted.

When should the windscreen of the Peugeot J5 be replaced?

A crack in the windscreen is annoying, just like an asterisk, but it is not always necessary to replace the windscreen immediately. When we look at the rules of the Dutch national road traffic authority ('RDW'), it's mainly about damage to the windscreen in the driver's field of vision. This window damage is not allowed when this is:

  • An asterisk or chip with a diameter of more than 20 millimetres is
  • A branched crack

If this is the case, the windscreen of your Peugeot J5 must be replaced. Although we usually advise against replacing windscreens ourselves, it is possible with the Peugeot J5 to get started when you are a little bit handy and have a place where you can work dry.

How can you replace the windscreen of your Peugeot J5 yourself?

The windscreen of the Peugeot J5 is not glued as is the case with most of the current car models you see on the street. It is a so-called 'window in rubber', which means that with a little technical insight you can easily replace the windscreen of the Peugeot J5 yourself.

Would you first like to know more about what this looks like in order to assess whether you are going to work yourself? Then you'll find a video here in which the windscreen of a Citroën DS (also a windscreen in rubber) is replaced. You don't have to cut away the kit on your Peugeot J5 - it shouldn't have been used on the DS either, as the mechanic himself points out:

Removing the window is a relatively easy job, because it is only placed in the rubbers. Then put the new rubber around the new windscreen and grab a 4-millimetre thick rope. This is placed in the U-profile of the windscreen with a loop at the top and bottom of the windscreen. You place this loop inward (towards the interior of the car and not towards the bonnet). Secure it with tape on the inside of the windscreen so that it is not lost during the placing of the windscreen.

Then place the windscreen against the rabbet of the car and get into the car. The loops make it easy to tighten the window. You can do this calmly and in this order:

  1. First the top and bottom of the windscreen
  2. Then the corners
  3. Then the A-pillars

In this way, the edge of the rubber comes around the rabbet and the new window is firmly fitted. Then gently press on the outside of the windscreen to secure the window in the rubber. Replacing the car window yourself is therefore quite possible with the Peugeot J5.

How much does a new windscreen cost for the Peugeot J5?

For € 239 you already have a new windscreen for your Peugeot J5. The windscreens for the J5 models are also interchangeable with the Fiat Talento, the Citroën C25 and the Fiat Ducato, as they all come from the same line. In addition to a new windscreen, you will also need a windscreen rubber (€ 90) if the old windscreen rubber has become porous or has cracks.
