Windscreen replacement for your Peugeot 309

The Peugeot 309 is probably the most strange model of Peugeot. Initially this was not a Peugeot and also the type number doesn't fit in the portfolio of the French car manufacturer. Do you need a windscreen replacement for your Peugeot 309 or do you have the iconic Peugeot 309 GTI 16 in mind, but does it have any damage to the windscreen? Then that's no problem at all. With the after market windscreen for the Peugeot 309 you always choose the best value for money and you already have a new windscreen for € 229.

Before we look at the windscreens for the Peugeot 309, we dive into history. Why is this type so strange and how successful has the 309 actually been?

The Talbot Arizona - or the Peugeot 309?

Peugeot took over Citroën in 1974 and two years later all the European branches of Chrysler were acquired. But the great successes did not materialise after the mergers. The Talbot line in particular underperformed. When Peugeot replaced the successor of the Talbot Horizon
with the Talbot Arizona in 1986, the company decided to pull the plug on Talbot.

But the Talbot Arizona had already been developed and these investments could not just be thrown away. That's why Peugeot decided to make a split. The design of the Talbot Arizona was adopted 1:1, but the model was marketed as the Peugeot 309.

Wait a minute, that's not possible at all, is it?

No, Peugeot has made a maverick within its own portfolio where actually little is true. In almost all Peugeot models the first number stands for the size of the car and the last number stands for the generation. And that's not right here. First of all the 3 isn't right, because the 309 is a compact car. Besides, the generation number is not correct at all: the Peugeot 309 was succeeded by... the Peugeot 306.

The Peugeot 309: a separate model with a moderate success

Because of the background of the 309, this Peugeot model has little in common with the other models of the French car manufacturer. The compact car was introduced to the market in 1986, where the Volkswagen Golf was dominant at the time.

The Peugeot 309 was produced in Great Britain and the cheapest models got Talbot engines. Furthermore, this type was only available as a semi-combination with three or five doors. That is why the Peugeot 305 also remained in production, so that customers could still choose a sedan or combi.

The Peugeot 309 became a reasonable success in Great Britain, partly because people there were used to the design of the Talbot. In the Netherlands there were no huge successes, but with sales in excess of 50,000, it is still a great achievement for a car that should never have existed. By way of comparison: the Peugeot 206, Peugeot's best-selling model in the Netherlands, sold better with more than 150,000 cars.

The Peugeot 309 GTI 16

An article on the Peugeot 309 is not complete without giving the Peugeot 309 GTI 16 the space it deserves. The basic model of the 309 GTI got the engine of the Peugeot 205 GTI, where the iconic Peugeot 309 GTI 16 got the engine of the Peugeot 405 Mi16 (which is also used in the Citroën BX 16V).

The sporty version of the 205 is still much to be found, because this model is produced in high numbers. This cannot be said of the Peugeot 309 GTI 16, which has a much smaller edition. But the 158 hp and the appearance of this French pearl make any search more than worthwhile. With such a car you can appear again at a rally:

When should a Peugeot 309 windscreen be replaced?

The windscreen of your Peugeot 309 must be replaced in the event of windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision, which is not within the limits of the law. In concrete terms, this means that the Peugeot's windscreen must be replaced in the event of an asterisk of more than 20 millimetres or a branched crack in the driver's field of vision.

A crack in the outer layer of the windscreen that crosses with a crack in the inner layer is also considered a branched crack.

If the car window damage is (still) within the limits, the direct replacement of the windscreen of your Peugeot 309 is not required by law. Nevertheless, it's good to keep an eye on the damage. In case of large temperature differences (air conditioning in the summer, heating in the winter) a crack can tear further and an asterisk can become a crack.

How can I replace my Peugeot 309 windscreen as cheaply as possible?

Perhaps you are considering purchasing a second-hand car window. This is a logical line of reasoning, because we can often find second-hand cheaper prices and thus save on costs for a variety of products. But you can't cheaply replace the car window with second-hand automotive glass. There are a number of reasons for this:

  1. Used car windows can also be damaged
  2. Not all mechanics want to install a second-hand car window
  3. A second-hand car window is often more expensive than an after market windscreen

Especially the last point is something to keep an eye on. With a second-hand car window you have no guarantee, but you often pay more than for an after market car window. This has everything to do with the brand logo.

A brand logo in the windscreen makes the windscreen more expensive. In the first instance, this may only be sold by the brand dealers and this exclusivity itself ensures a higher price. After market automotive glass does not have a brand logo, but meets the same requirements and is often made in the same factories as the Peugeot brand glass.

Can I replace the windscreen of my Peugeot 309 myself?

Doing the car window replacement yourself is not a good idea if you are not a car mechanic or garage owner. An incorrectly fitted windscreen can come loose during abrupt braking and can leak in places where you do not notice it immediately.

Are you a mechanic or garage owner? Then you can order the Peugeot windscreens from us without installation. You can even choose to pick up these windscreens.

How much does a Peugeot 309 windscreen cost?

€ 229 for a clear Peugeot 309 windscreen and € 169 for a bronze tinted windscreen. This price does not include installation and does not include delivery. Do you want our certified fitting partners to replace the windscreen while you are working in North Groningen, South Limburg, the Randstad or elsewhere in the Netherlands? Then the total price will be € 329 if the old rubber moulding can be reused. You can also choose to arrange this as soon as possible (within 24 hours). In that case we charge a small surcharge.
