A cheap way to replace the windscreen of your Renault 5

The Renault 5 has been one of the longest running production lines of Renault. The first car rolled out of the factory in 1972 and sales only stopped in 1996, after having sold more than 7 million units worldwide. In the Netherlands alone more than 60,000 cars were sold, making the Renault 5 one of the top models on our soil. Some people are still looking for a Renault 5, especially the turbo version, because it remains a pearl. Thanks to the wide after market there are also plenty of spare parts for repairs and replacements. Do you need a windscreen replacement for your Renault 5? If so, you can go to the after market.

Before we go into the possibilities of replacing your Renault 5 windscreen, we will of course take a look back at this very special French model, nicknamed Le Car.

The compact car that had to conquer the market in 1972

The Renault 5 has clearly been a move by the French automaker to appeal to the younger segment. Partly by calling the car a Supercar in the first promotions. When we go into the archives, all the commercials focus on the power, the small size and above all many things you don't want to do directly with your Renault 5. Like the driving skills of the driver cast for the American advertising, in which 'Le Car' also had to do it on the other side of the ocean.

The Renault 5 was immediately marketed as a five-door car with reinforced polyester plates, but all in all a lot were taken over from the Renault 4, its predecessor. Like the complete front-wheel drive, the gearbox and also the torsion suspension were borrowed from the little brother. Even the lengthwise engine under the bonnet with 850cc was borrowed. The larger engines were also borrowed from Renault. For this purpose the engines of the Renault 12
and the Renault 18
were used.

These were good choices of Renault, which could reduce the production costs of the Renault 5 and put the 'Supercar' on the market at a relatively cheap price. Soon the Renault 5 was brought to America and also in Japan the compact Frenchman was sold well.

And then there is the Turbo version

The Renault 5 was an immediate success. More than 60,000 units were sold in the Netherlands. That is 'only' a quarter of the sales figures of the Renault Clio, but with the Renault 5 it is firmly seventh on the list of most sold Renault models in the Netherlands.

And this is partly due to the success of the Renault 5 Turbo and the Renault 5 Turbo II. Both models have the engine at the back of the car, making this a real two-seater. These models also don't have front-wheel drive; it is the rear axle that is driven.  A striking fact is that the Renault 5 Turbo II has taken over more parts of the Renault 5 than the Turbo I, but it still weighs considerably less. And that means more horsepower per kilogram.

158 hp to be precise with a five-speed manual gearbox, and 0 to 100 kilometres per hour within 7 seconds. The maximum speed of this car from the 80's is a sloppy 200 kilometres per hour. And Renault pulled out another trick to make this car very popular. Only 1800 examples of the Renault Turbo (I) were made. The Turbo II can hardly be called rarer with 3200 cars on the market.

And what about the Renault 7 as a sedan version?

There is still one striking model that we would like to review. It concerns the Renault 7
which is only marketed in Spain. A special sedan version of the Renault 5 was developed for this model and was sold between 1974 and 1983. This model was never marketed in other countries and for a good reason: Renault's positive, innovative and sporty image had to be maintained on other markets.

When should the windscreen of your Renault 5 be replaced?

Do you have a Renault 5 that needs some love and attention? Or do you have a Renault 5 in mind that clearly has some overdue maintenance among its members? Windscreen damage is something often seen in older cars. A chip in the window for example, a crack or scratches on the side window. When do these windows need to be replaced?

If we look at the regulations, we see that especially the windscreen has to meet strict requirements. A car window replacement is necessary when there is glass damage in the driver's field of vision and it concerns a chip with a diameter of more than 20 millimetres or a branched crack.

In either case, you may not drive any further and the car will not pass through the MOT. But don't lose heart, because replacing the Renault 5 windscreen is probably considerably cheaper than you think.

How much does a new Renault 5 windscreen cost?

A new windscreen for your Renault 5 starts at just € 199. These windscreens are suitable for the years between 1984 and 1990. Do you need a windscreen for an earlier model year? Then the price of this windscreen is € 369. These prices do not include mounting and delivery. During the ordering process you can easily indicate what you want and the price will be adjusted immediately.

These windscreens are offered so cheap because they are after market car windows. They have the same quality as the brand windows of your Renault dealer, but do not have a brand logo. This immediately causes the price to be hundreds of euros lower. The price of an after market windscreen for your Renault 5 is therefore often cheaper than the brand glass that is offered as a second-hand car window.
