From Adventure Concept Car to the Volvo XC90 in 2002

In 2001, Volvo arrived at the International Motor Show in North America with the Adventure Concept Car and it took only a year before Volvo finally presented the Volvo XC90, which was placed on the P2 platform
we already knew from the larger models like the Volvo S80. What was particularly noticeable was that the first generation immediately featured multiple equipment levels and engine offerings, presumably to aggressively win Americans over to the new XC90. Especially when the Yamaha V8 4-4-litre engine with 311 hp and 411 Nm was added and tens of thousands of XC90s sold like hot cakes in North America. The fact that even TV host Jeremy Clarkson commented positively on the 'extremely practical' XC90 no doubt helped.

The second generation in 2015 and the choice of the SPA platform

A lot went wrong when setting up the second generation in 2015. The idea was to use Ford's platform (EUCD),
but Ford ran out of money and had no way to make the facelifts possible. Therefore, Volvo fell back on the SPA platform. This ensured that the model grew in all directions and again, powerful engines were thrown into the offering to win over buyers. The fact that individually numbered copies were sold and both Carl XVI Gustav (King of Sweden) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (known from the Volvo XC70 advertisement and the football pitch) were in front to order, again contributed to the success of this special model.

All the space Volvo had left in the budget and the car was spent on features. For example, the XC90 is equipped with internet radio, a 9-inch touchscreen, an air filtration system and a system that provides extra protection for the occupants if the car goes off the road for any reason. In addition, with an XC90 you can also benefit from the proprietary IntelliSafe system, adaptive cruise control and endless options that allow you to make this model even more interesting.

Has the Volvo XC90 become a sales success in the Netherlands?

At the time of writing, the sales counter for the Volvo XC90 stands at around 20,000 units,
easily leaving behind the Volvo 850, Volvo S80 and the Volvo 940, especially since the XC90 is still in production. Incidentally, the XC90 has become a sales success worldwide, which is remarkable at a time when smaller cars are popular. The huge sales success, by the way, is mainly due to the US market, as that is where most XC90s from Sweden drive around.

Volvo knew the Volvo XC90 was a bold, edgy model when the big SUV was launched. This time the Swedes did decide to reflect this in the advert, making it probably the most talked-about Volvo advert ever after the XC70 promo featuring Zlatan.
