The Volvo XC70 never became a huge success in the Netherlands, but it has been an important model for Volvo itself. This entry-level SUV increased its market share and paved the way for the models that would follow after the XC70, despite the fact that the XC70 would not initially get its own batch at all.

It remains to be seen whether, when the XC70 was introduced, the Swedes intended to make this a stand-alone model. Indeed, it was the Volvo V70 XC that would become the first generation of the Volvo XC70, but was nothing but the crossover version of the Volvo V70 itself. The V70 XC was shown to the public in 1997 and then launched in 1998, where it immediately received a lot of attention, which was mainly due to its comfort. In fact, the XC was higher than the Volvo V70 itself, which made getting in and out of the car considerably easier.
The second generation would get even higher, with a total ground clearance of 210 millimetres. Unfortunately, the second generation came with a small engine range, with either a 2.4-litre petrol engine or the standard D5 diesel. However, the second generation of the Volvo V70 XC did mark the birth of the actual Volvo XC70, as here Volvo decided to give the model its 'own' name.
In 2009, another DRIVe version of the Volvo XC70 would be made with 175 hp and a whopping 420 Nm of torque. In 2016, the curtain would fall on the XC70 itself, which had managed to work its way up from 'type within the V70' to a standalone batch. The Volvo XC70 was succeeded by the Volvo V90 Cross Country, marking Volvo's return to old behaviour.
This big goal is also evident in its advertising campaigns, in which Volvo actually had big Swedish stars to shine, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic (perhaps not a Swede by birth, but definitely a national hero), Robyn and Avicii (both musicians). For the XC70, Volvo bravely combined the Swedish national anthem with Zlatan's presence, stunning visuals and, if you pay attention, you will even see the XC70 drive by a few times.
