The Volkswagen Tayron has a special history, as it does not start in Germany, but in China. The first generation of the Tayron was made by FAW-Volkswagen, the collaboration between Volkswagen and a Chinese carmaker (which makes more German car models in China from Volkswagen Group). The Volkswagen Tayron entered the Chinese market in 2018 and was expanded two years later with the Volkswagen Tayron X, a coupé version of the Tayron that was also slightly longer than the original model.
This first generation would only be launched in China. Europe and the rest of the world had to wait for the second generation, which would come much later.
The second generation of the Volkswagen Tayron was shown to the public in Paris in October 2024. It became a spacious SUV (optional as a 7-seater) placed between the Volkswagen Touareg and Volkswagen Tiguan, replacing the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace in the European market.
This model would also come to North America with a slight modification. Only the version with a longer wheelbase was offered there, but under the Volkswagen Tiguan name.
For the European market, many plans immediately emerged that were shared at the launch. For instance, it was stated that seven different engines will be available for the model within a short time and that plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models with more than 100 kilometres of all-electric range (850 kilometres between refuelling stops) will also be launched.
Volkswagen's decision to locate production of the second-generation Volkswagen Tayron in Wolfsburg (alongside Puebla in Mexico and Changchun in China) was an important one. Firstly, Wolfsburg is the factory that has made almost 50 million cars (making it the record holder), and secondly because it is where the successful Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan and Volkswagen Touran are made.
During the launch, the German team thanked the efforts of the Chinese team, and Volkswagen also stressed that the Tayron came to Wolfsburg to provide more employment (job guarantee) in the region, ensuring that this SUV had every opportunity to become a great success.
At the time we are writing this article for you, the model is still very fresh on the market in Europe, which means it is difficult to estimate its success. However, we can see that it became a hit in China: almost half a million units were sold of the first generation, something FAW-Volkswagen can be proud of.
