The Kia Optima is one of Kia's more popular models, although its history is somewhat strange with numerous different names for different markets. More than 2,000 units of this model have been sold in the Netherlands, and many of these cars are still on the road. If you have an Optima and need a windscreen replacement, you have come to the right place. This is because we have inexpensive windscreens for the Kia Optima, which are identical in quality to the original car windows for this model. Before we delve further into this, let's take a look at the Kia Optima to see if it became the success the South Korean car manufacturer was hoping for.
The history of the Kia Optima actually starts in 2000, but since the first two generations were sold in Europe as Kia Magentis, we start here in 2010. If you want to know more about the predecessors, please refer to our page with information on replacing a Kia Magentis windscreen.
When the second generation of the Kia Magentis was replaced in Europe in 2010, the name changed to Kia Optima, but that was not the only change. Indeed, Peter Schreyer, head of the design team at Kia, put his stamp on the model, bringing it in line with the Kia Forte, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage and the Kia Cadenza, with a more modern design. The model also went to the platform shared with the Hyundai i40 and the name “Optima” was used in all markets worldwide, except South Korea and China (there, the model was called the Kia K5).
The new Optima was also packed with numerous features, including satellite radio, a hands-free Bluetooth system for the phone, ABS and ESC and Microsoft's UVO infotainment system. To further increase market share, a larger version (wagon) was also being worked on, but it would not reach the market.
The new model was well received. In 2012, it came third in a major comparison survey, trailing only the Volkswagen Passat and the Honda Accord.
To make the model even more attractive, Kia also released a hybrid with an all-electric range of 100 kilometres, which was more than the range of competitors at the time. This model would get a Guinness World Record to its name for the lowest consumption during a 14-day drive in the United States, from the Kia factory in West Point.
In 2015, the fourth generation (the second Optima) entered the market and this model shared the platform with the Hyundai Sonata. It got a new design and more features, but the transition was much smaller than with the first Kia Optima. Kia did decide to release a Sportswagon for the European market, as it was in high demand.
Kia also released a PHEV version of the car, which rivalled the Tesla Model S (which is fully electric) in terms of consumption. Although the model looked extremely good on paper, it only entered the market in the US and sales figures were disappointing.
The fifth generation was released in 2019, but the name was changed to Kia K5 and this model would not come to Europe, as there was little demand for sedans and Kia had clearly shifted its attention to models like the Kia EV6 and Kia EV9.
The Kia Optima has been a success for Kia, although it is unclear exactly how many models were made, something that also has to do with the different names for the generations and markets. However, we can see that over 150,000 units were sold annually in the United States in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, with respectable figures for the remaining years of production as well, making it immediately clear that this has become a success for the South Korean carmaker.
The Kia Optima also became a reasonable success in the Netherlands, with 2,180 models sold. With that, the model scores better than many other Kia models, but at the same time it has to beat models like the Kia Joice and Kia Carnival in the rankings, something that is not really something to get happy about.
In any case, what has become a great success, in our humble opinion, is the advertising Kia has done for this model.
Windscreen damage is always annoying. When it comes to the windscreen, the windscreen does not immediately fall apart when damaged : the layers of glass are held together by a layer of PVB film. This means that, in many cases, you can continue driving as normal. That does not apply to windscreen damage in the driver's field of vision where there is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 2 centimetres. In such cases, the car is no longer allowed to participate in traffic and will also be rejected at the next MOT. This is because this window damage can easily cause dangerous situations.
