The Audi e-tron was not only a model with which Audi wanted to drive the transition to electric driving, it was at the same time a statement. It was to be an electric car for real car enthusiasts, who didn't want everyone to be able to tell immediately that it was an EV. This created compromises that ensured the actual Audi e-tron never managed to come out on top. If you have an Audi e-tron whose windscreen needs to be replaced, then you have come to the right place. Before we look at our windscreens, let's take a look at the e-tron and how important it has become for Audi.
The e-tron models are the electric cars with which Audi wanted to ensure it maintained market share in the future, but with electric models. The actual Audi e-tron went into production in 2018 (2019 model year) but today “e-tron” has become the series name for numerous electric cars from Audi. More on that below.
The Audi e-tron has had numerous concept models, first shown in 2009. These did not go into production, except for the Audi R8 e-tron (2015). However, this was withdrawn from production again after a short production period, after which one had to wait until 2019 (Dutch market) before the real Audi e-tron would come out.
The list of models that have been given the e-tron label is long, especially if you include hybrid models. The most well-known e-trons are the Audi Q4 e-tron, Audi Q6 e-tron, Audi Q8 e-tron, Audi A6 e-tron and the Audi e-tron GT. Consequently, with the exception of the GT, these models have sold well in and outside the Netherlands.
Audi had an agenda with the e-tron. The German car manufacturer was not immediately eager to make an electric car, but that was mainly due to the image and appearance of the average electric car. And with models such as the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf in the spotlight at the time, we can't really blame Audi for this.
So the team went back to the drawing board and decided to make a car with the look and standards of Audi, but without a combustion engine. The result was striking, and opinions immediately differed widely. The Audi e-tron was praised for its rear passenger space, spacious boot and luxurious appearance, but at the same time it had become a large, heavy and stiff model, whose main advantage seemed to be its price. However, although the e-tron was cheaper than the Mercedes EQC, Jaguar iPace, BMW iX and Ford Mustang Mach-E, many people felt that the e-tron was therefore the inferior choice. This was certainly true when looking at range and speed, as the Audi is inferior to its competitors in these areas.
After reading the above, you might think that the Audi e-tron has flopped. That is not true, and there are several reasons for this. First of all, this was an important model for Audi, which took a step forward towards the future of mobility: plugs and charging cables. It was also an affordable alternative for people who wanted to drive electric but at the same time wanted a reliable car that could simply be parked in their driveway.
In the Netherlands, more than 11,000 Audi e-trons have been sold, which at the time of writing is about 4,000 sales behind the Audi Q4 e-tron (and that gap will never be closed).
What is at least as important is that the Audi e-tron is a model Audi can be proud of. It is primarily a good, comfortable and luxurious car that also happens to be electric. The promotional video below illustrates this particularly well and immediately makes clear what Audi's idea was when developing this model.
The rules regarding windscreen replacement are the same for electric cars and non-electric cars. This means that the windscreen of your Audi e-tron must be replaced if the damage is in the driver's field of vision and is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of 20 millimetres or more. This damage is a serious distraction while driving, and incoming light can be reflected unpredictably by the windscreen damage, which can cause glare while driving.
In all other cases, you can choose to continue driving with the windscreen damage, but as this significantly affects the appearance of your e-tron, it may be worth taking a look at the price of a new Audi e-tron windscreen below.
You can get a new Audi e-tron windscreen for just €499. That is much cheaper than what the Audi dealer wants you to pay, while the quality of our car windows is identical to the original windscreens. However, our aftermarket car windows do not feature a brand logo that gives them an exclusive character, which means we can keep our prices much lower.
The price difference is so great that our new car windows are often still cheaper than second-hand automotive glass. This makes it immediately clear where you need to go if you want to order automotive glass with the best price-quality ratio.
There are several reasons why it is not wise to replace the windscreen of your Audi e-tron yourself. The first reason is that repairs to electric cars can involve dangerous situations, with considerable risks. Car mechanics even have special tools and gloves for working on electric cars, so it is better to leave repairs and maintenance on an EV to a professional.
In addition, you need the right knowledge, experience and tools to replace the windscreen of your Audi e-tron. If the windscreen is not replaced correctly, there is a good chance that you will damage the new windscreen or your car, which will only increase the costs. That is why we work with professional fitting partners who replace car windows on-site for all our customers. This means you don't have to worry about a thing and can be back on the road in no time with an intact, clean windscreen in your Audi e-tron.
