Skoda has worked hard over the last few decades on models to give the brand a stronger name and reputation. Perhaps this is the reason for naming a model after the biggest brown bear, because that is where the Skoda Kodiaq's name comes from. The SUV became a success for the carmaker and at the time of writing, the sales counter is already over 20,000 in the Netherlands. If you have a Skoda Kodiaq with windscreen damage, here's how to find out when the windscreen needs to be replaced and how cheaply this can be done when you choose affordable replacement car windows. But first, of course, we take a look together at the brown bear from Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic.
The 5-door SUV arrived on the market in 2016, although the name “Kodiaq” had been established by Skoda 10 years earlier. The first models emerged from the Vision S concept car in 2016, but it would be another two years before the first Kodiaqs would actually hit consumers' driveways. The Skoda Kodiaq was the first model to feature the new ADAS systems such as Area View, Tow Assist, Predictive Pedestrian Protection and Manoeuvre Assist, preparing the mid-size SUV for the competition. This also clearly showed that the Kodiaq was positioned higher in the market than the Skoda Kamiq and Skoda Karoq.
The Kodiaq is on the MQB platform from Volkswagen, just like, for example, the Volkswagen Tiguan (Allspace version) and the Seat Tarraco.
When a facelift was released for the Skoda Kodiaq in 2021, it turned out to be a number of minor tweaks, such as smaller headlights, larger rims (up to 20 inches) and more attention to aerodynamics (mainly to make the model more fuel-efficient and thus more attractive).
Incidentally, Skoda didn't have to go to much trouble either, as in 2017 and 2018 it had already released the Skoda Kodiaq Scout, Skoda Kodiaq Sportline, Skoda Kodiaq RS and GT. With that, the range was wide enough to put a Kodiaq at the dealership for every possible buyer. The Skoda Kodiaq RS was the most expensive model and by far the most powerful with 237 hp and 500 Nm of torque. At the time of writing, this model is still the fastest 7-seater SUV at the Nürburgring. And the driver (Sabine Schmitz) had the most fun with it, too.
When the second generation arrived at dealerships in 2024, two things became clear. First, the fact that Skoda had paid even more attention to aerodynamics and wanted the models to be even more fuel efficient. In addition, it became clear that Skoda had retained combustion engines in the Kodiaq after all, although the second generation also comes as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with an all-electric range of around 110 kilometres (standard for Volkswagen's PHEV versions). However, the charging hybrid is not available as a seven-seater, but has a maximum of five seats, simply because the electric motor and drivetrain demand more space in the model.
Whether that's thanks to the advertisements, we'll leave that for now. By way of illustration, below you can watch the commercials that aired in New Zealand to promote the model, but the question is whether it is mainly about the car, or this is an afterthought.
Windscreen damage is extremely annoying and in most cases causes a shock reaction, especially when the damage is caused by a stone splashing against the window, resulting in a chip or crack in the windscreen. In most cases, you can continue driving as normal with windscreen damage, but in some cases, the windscreen needs to be replaced. Then the car will be rejected at the next MOT and driving on is dangerous.
