Cheap windscreen replacement for your BMW i3

The BMW i3 has been a revolutionary vehicle in the electric car segment. Not only because of its technology, but even because of the actual basis of the car. In a special factory in America, a special carbon fibre body is made, which is then bonded to the aluminium parts of the body in Leipzig. BMW's EV has become a reasonable success, but it has mainly been a leap of faith on the part of the Germans. Do you own a BMW i3 and need to replace your windscreen? We offer new BMW i3 windscreens from € 599.

Before we look at the after market windscreens for the BMW i3, we will first take a closer look at this special model of BMW that, despite its higher entry price, had to become a formidable competitor to the Nissan Leaf.

September 2013; the BMW i3 comes to the dealers

BMW has been busy developing the i3 for a long time. This is partly due to the fact that this is not 'just' an electric car; the i-line is a completely new sub-line where the CO2 emissions of the cars have to be zero. BMW has gone a long way in this respect; you can think of the use of olive extract and hemp for the car's interior, along with fully sustainable wood that is sourced exclusively from Europe. Not only electric, but also fully sustainable.

The BMW i3 is available in various models, whereby the main focus is on the battery capacity. For example, the standard model has a 60Ah battery, but battery packs of 94Ah and 120Ah can also be found in the models made from 2017 onwards. BMW has also launched a version with a so-called range extender. This model has the type name REx and has a Kymco 647cc two-cylinder petrol engine. This, incidentally, can only be used to reach the next destination; you cannot drive long distances with the combustion engine (it is a fallback solution). The batteries in BMW i3 REx models are identical to those found in fully electric models.

The success of the BMW i3

At the time of writing, the BMW i3 has not yet been sold 10,000 times
in the Netherlands. However, the 200,000th BMW i3 rolled out of the Leipzig plant in October 2020. This makes the sales success of the BMW i3 more than reasonable. The question is whether BMW had a sales stunt in mind, or wanted to set up a new sub-line that is completely climate-neutral, in order to subsequently develop further in the direction of the BMW i8.

Incidentally, BMW absolutely failed to compete with the Nissan Leaf or Tesla models. This is partly due to the limited range and the consumer's idea that a carbon fibre body is less strong and safe. Another reason for disappointing sales figures, despite its great promise, is the fact that the i3 did not connect with BMW enthusiasts. Are you familiar with the BMW adverts with their fierce cornering, race tracks, "this car can go from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in three seconds" and all the other fierce performances of BMW models? Put this advert next to it and you'll know why a BMW driver never watches the advert to the end.

Which charging cable do I need?

The BMW i3 with a 22 kWh battery is charged using a type 2 (Mennekes socket) single-phase 32A charging cable. A full charge from 0 to 100% takes 12 hours. If you have a newer BMW i3 with a 33 kWh battery, you can also use a three-phase 16A charging cable. The charging time is then reduced to 4 hours and 15 minutes.

When should the windscreen of a BMW i3 be replaced?

Car window damage is always annoying, but not all windscreen damage is a reason for a failed MOT check. On the contrary, in most cases you can drive on with a damaged windscreen. Windscreen damage is only disapproved when it concerns a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or a branched tear in the driver's field of vision.

Do you have a smaller chip, or a chip or crack outside the driver's field of vision? Then there is no reason to panic. However, it is wise to keep an eye on the window damage, because a damaged windscreen can crack further.

How much does a new windscreen for the BMW i3 cost?

We can offer you a new BMW i3 windscreen for just € 599. This is much cheaper than the new price at your BMW dealer, even though the automotive glass is identical. In fact, our aftermarket windscreens are made in the same factories as the ones at your BMW dealer.

However, the dealer's windscreens have a brand logo, which means they can only be sold by the dealer. Our windscreens do not carry a brand logo. This automatically means that the price-quality ratio is optimal. Our new windscreens are often cheaper than second-hand original BMW i3 windscreens!

Can I replace the windscreen of my BMW i3 myself?

You can replace the windscreen of your BMW i3 yourself if you have experience in replacing car windows and if you follow the instructions for working on an electric vehicle. If this is not the case, you can order a new BMW i3 windscreen from us including fitting. Our certified fitting partners install new windscreens on location throughout the Netherlands and Belgium, so that we can make it as easy as possible for you.
