Cheap windscreen replacement for your Skoda Favorit

The Skoda Favorit has become a legendary model for the Czech (and Czechoslovakian) company. Not because of its sales figures, but because of the car manufacturer's leap to connect with the large, much-needed Western European market. Thousands of units of the model have been sold in the Netherlands, and when the windscreen of your Favorit needs replacing, you have come to the right place. We are happy to tell you exactly how, but not before looking at the special story behind this remarkable model.

1987-1994: the Skoda Favorit put the Czechs on the Western European map

Skoda wanted to connect with the larger, popular car brands in the 1980s, so it decided to design a new model with the engine under the bonnet (i.e. now in the front instead of the back), and in 1982 the state (owner of Skoda at this time) approved the design. It took until 1987 before this would finally lead to production of the Skoda Favorit, a name the company had previously used for a sedan made from 1936 to 1941.

Joining Western Europe was not a resounding success, but the Skoda Favorit did become a resounding success in Central Europe. The model would additionally be sold in numerous South American countries. The Skoda Favorit had many strong selling points, such as its low entry price and cheap parts. Replacement car parts were easily and cheaply available, which was mainly due to the fact that many parts of Eastern European cars were simply interchangeable with those of completely different models.

In 1994, the Favorit was withdrawn from production and replaced by the Skoda Felicia, which would no longer be made under the Czech flag, but under the Volkswagen label, which had become the new owner.

The Skoda Favorit in motorsport

However, the biggest surprises the Favorit pulled off in motorsport, where, with a 1.3-litre engine, it beat favourites such as Citroën, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Ford. The Favorit was able to keep up surprisingly well and with Pavel Sibera and Emil Triner behind the wheel, the model even managed to achieve several top 10 positions, including a number 1 and number 2 position in the under 1300cc class. This contributed greatly to Skoda's reputation and brand awareness.

How successful has the Skoda Favorit been?

The Skoda Favorit had an incredibly false start, as Skoda was owned by communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, which had numerous problems with the head of the design team, and which led to the model being delayed for years and the 2-door coupé and 4-door saloon never going into production (which could have boosted its sales success enormously). Partly because of this, the model that could have been a resounding success never became a sales success, although it would become popular in central Europe. Some 50,000 units went to the UK and just over 5,000 were sold in the Netherlands, with which the Favourit still outperformed the Skoda Felicia, but was ahead of the Skoda Rapid and Skoda Scala (both far from successes).

Does that make the Skoda Favorit a flop? Actually no, because this model represents the transition of Skoda, which sought to connect with the Western European market with the Favorit and threw the usual car design off the drawing board, to take a step towards the future.

Looking at the advertisements made for this model, we can really say pretty little about it, because that's all it is: pretty little advertising. Like this “gem”:

Or, to make it even better (read: worse), an advert that aired in the Netherlands to get Dutch people to go to the dealerships en masse:

When does the windscreen of a Skoda Favorit need replacing?

Although there are not many examples of this model on the road anymore (as it turned out, Favourit models have a fairly limited lifespan), you may still own a Skoda Favourit and have a damaged windscreen. In that case, it is a good idea to check when the car windscreen actually needs to be replaced. Is the damage in the driver's field of vision and does it involve a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of 20 millimetres or more? If so, your car will no longer pass the MOT and the windscreen will need to be replaced.

What does a new Skoda Favorit windscreen cost?

You already have a new Skoda Favorit windscreen for just €249 (including VAT). That's considerably cheaper than the price of an original windscreen, but no worries. In fact, you only compromise on cost and not quality. This is possible because our replacement Skoda windscreens have no brand logo and therefore lack the exclusive character of the automotive glass. This quickly saves you hundreds of euros and ensures that our new windscreens are often still cheaper than second-hand automotive glass.
