The Honda Legend, the large, more luxurious sedan that would become Honda's flagship car, is a striking car that immediately attracts attention. Although expectations were high, they were never met and the Legend became a moderate success for the Japanese. Do you have a Honda Legend with windscreen damage and need its windscreen replaced? Then you can find affordable car windows with us without compromising on quality. Before we get into that, let's take a look at this particular model that never really took off.
The Honda Legend had an incredibly bad start. The model entered the market in 1985, with Honda deciding to partner with Britain's Austin Rover Group, a car manufacturer known for quality, luxury cars. Honda decided that Rover would make the Legend at Cowley for the entire market in Britain, but most of the cars failed Honda's quality checks, which meant that most Legend models would be used mainly in the field at Cowley and only a few would show up at dealerships.
The Legend also had to be modified for the Japanese market, as the model would come in a higher tax rate unless the model was made smaller. While export models for the European and North American markets remained large, the range of options available was modest. In Europe, one could opt for the Special Equipment Pack, which added cruise control, as well as aluminium wheels and lumbar support for the driver, height-adjustable headrests and a stereo with four speakers (Philips), plus headlight wipers.
In 1990, the second generation entered the market, looking more modern thanks to better streamlining. This generation would not offer much for the European and North American markets, as Honda looked mainly to Japan for this generation. For instance, the second generation of the Legend was the second Honda model to get a built-in navigation system (Electro Gyrocator), after the Honda Accord.
With the third generation in 1995, Honda still stuck to front-wheel drive and, against the wishes of consumers, Honda decided to stick with the V6, although it became more powerful in the form of a 3.5-litre. Again, the focus remained on Japan, where the models got a built-in internet navigation system (Internavi), and two trim levels came, the Euro (base) and Exclusive (premium), both of which were amply equipped with luxury features.
Incidentally, this was also when the Honda Legend disappeared from the North American market. In its place came the Acura RL, simply a Honda Legend with a different logo.
The fourth generation in 2004 once again showed how stoic Honda was, because instead of a V8 model with all-wheel drive, the Japanese chose to go for all-wheel drive, but still not for a V8 engine. For the Japanese market, the model was again made smaller and looked at the first generation, although the model was otherwise much more modern and would look much sleeker.
It also appeared that the focus on Japan continued unabated. Indeed, only one version (the EX) came out for the European market, where people in Japan had much more choice.
The fifth generation launched in 2014 showed no change in this regard. The model entered the market as a Sport Hybrid and was only shown in Japan at launch. In addition, the ideas behind the fourth generation were thrown in the bin, as the fifth generation saw the model become so large that it became the longest Honda ever (over 5 metres).
The desired success did not materialise. In 2020, the model (Acura RL) was withdrawn from production in America and a year later, the Honda Legend also disappeared.
The Honda Legend was very well received and received numerous awards, such as most reliable car (Consumer Reports, October 2010), but the big sales success failed to materialise. Not only because this is a higher-end luxury car (which is less in demand), but also because the model was more expensive than many of its competitors (such as the BMW 5 Series), while the Honda Legend was not available with a V8 and models of its competitors were.
This led to a decision in June 2021 to withdraw the car from production and not launch a replacement. What we still have are the models still on the road and the old adverts, in which Honda wanted to bring out the luxury in the James Bond atmosphere:
The Honda Legend is the flagship model of the Japanese car brand and exudes luxury and elegance, but the windscreen is still made of laminated automotive glass. This means that the windscreen can be damaged, but in which cases should it be replaced? There are two cases. If the damage is in the driver's field of vision and is a chip with a diameter of at least 2 centimetres or a branched crack, you will need a new Honda Legend windscreen. This damage is too dangerous because it distracts you while driving and incoming light can reflect unpredictably, causing you to be blinded.
In all other cases, you may continue driving with the windscreen damage, although we recommend that you first take a look at the price of a new windscreen from us below.
You can get a new Honda Legend windscreen from €499 (suitable for the saloon model manufactured between 2007 and 2012). This includes VAT and excludes any costs for fitting and/or delivery. Although our car windows are much cheaper than the original automotive glass, the quality is identical. The windows are often even made in the same place, but because our windscreens do not feature a brand logo that gives them an exclusive character (which is included in the price), we can offer our products at a much lower price. Our new windows are often even cheaper than second-hand automotive glass.
We strongly advise against replacing the windscreen yourself if you have little or no experience in doing so. Replacing a Honda Legend windscreen is not a job you can do on a Saturday afternoon: it is a major job that must be carried out with precision to prevent damage to the new windscreen and car, and to ensure that the new windscreen is fitted correctly. That is why we work with professional fitting partners who replace car windows on-site throughout the Netherlands and Belgium at very competitive prices.
Do you have the right knowledge and tools, or do you know someone who can replace the Honda Legend windscreen for you? Then you can of course also come to us for new automotive glass without fitting.
