The Honda Civic is by far the most popular model from the Japanese marque, which is actually particularly striking, as this is the model that marked the transition from motorbikes to cars. In the Netherlands, the Honda Civic has sold extremely well and the counter is well over 100,000 at the time of writing. If you have a Civic whose windscreen needs replacing, you have come to the right place. Before we start talking about our cheap Honda Civic windscreens, we will of course take a look together at this model that managed to break all sales records.
The first generation was introduced in 1972 as would be marketed as the 1973 model year in Japan. The model was immediately available as 2, 3, 4 and 5-doors in a variety of trims, making it immediately clear that Honda had high hopes for the Civic and wanted to serve the market with it. This accidentally worked out even better than planned, because the extremely economical Civic was the ideal car during the 1973 oil crisis. Honda would immediately capitalise on this by calling it the most fuel-efficient car on the market and constantly including this in its marketing.
In 1976, Honda decided to release a larger model, which was put on an extended Civic platform. This was the Honda Accord, which in turn would also be a great success.
The second generation of the Civic (model year 1980) would be larger than the first generation and received a significantly more powerful engine. Power output varied greatly by market (different models were made for the Japanese, European and North American markets) and again Honda chose to market the Civic as a hatchback, sedan and estate version, in order to appeal to the widest possible audience.
The fourth generation launched in September 1987 looked more like a facelift than a new generation. The model was made a little longer and lower, and the interior was refreshed so that the more modern Civic would better compete with European models. The rear suspension of all versions would also be updated from this generation onwards.
In 1991, the Honda Civic once again became larger, but at the same time more attention was paid to aerodynamics. It also came with a new version, the Honda Civic Coupé, which was based on the sedan version, the Civic Ferio.
If any generation could have been called a facelift, it was the sixth generation that came out in 1995 (model year 1996). The design changes were much less drastic than in the previous generations and the biggest modifications were a change in the engine line-up, something that, incidentally, would remain constant in both the Honda Civic and the Honda Accord.
With the seventh generation, the main focus was on the interior, where much more space would be created for the occupants. However, the biggest modification was to be found in the versions, as it was during this generation that the first hybrid Civic would enter the market, the Honda Civic Hybrid.
The eighth generation in 2005 (2006 model year) showed basically no surprises again. There were again two platforms and special versions were made for specific markets, this time taking inspiration for the rear suspension from the Honda Jazz - better known as the Honda Fit in markets like the US. During the eighth generation, the sales counter would shoot over 16.5 million, almost half of which were sold in the US.
In 2011, Honda came up with numerous tweaks to get the Civic fresh and modern again and immediately opted for four versions (sedan, station, hatchback and coupe), but this generation would never be offered in Japan proper.
This time, the sedan also featured a hybrid version, with the lithium-ion battery pack working in tandem with a 1.5 i-VTEC petrol engine.
In 2015, the tenth generation of the Honda Civic entered the market and also became part of the Japanese brand's standardisation of car models for the global market. Since the US market was so important to Honda, it opted for a larger model and did not come with a compact model for the European market. This would not be the only major modification, the interior also got a makeover with a full 7-inch LCD screen and new gauges on the dashboard.
Although the eleventh generation was shown back in 2020, the new models did not arrive at dealerships in Europe until 2022. The coupé disappeared from the range entirely because sales numbers were too low, and so the new generation is only available as a hatchback and liftback, which means the latest Honda Civic literally has nothing in common with the original models made in 1976, except for the name.
This modernisation was necessary and in the advertisement below, you can clearly see that with this generation, Honda wants to put the Civic back on the map and re-enter the competition.
The Honda Civic is one of the best-selling car models worldwide of all time. As early as 2022, the counter passed the 30 million mark and the model entered the list of best-selling car models, behind the Toyota Corolla, Ford F-Series, Volkswagen Golf and the Volkswagen Passat. A huge achievement, as the Civic is Honda's first internationally sold model, which proudly managed to put itself on the map.
We should also make room here for the clever, somewhat cheeky and often witty advertisements that aired. This is easier than thought, as the video below compiles the commercials that aired between 1976 and 1979 for the Honda Civic. This isn't just nostalgia, it's enjoying car commercials that are well thought out and, above all, not full of loud and unnecessary noise or effects.
The windscreen of your Honda Civic is made of laminated glass. On the one hand, this means that the window won't simply shatter into thousands of pieces in the event of damage, as the two layers are held together by a layer of PVB film. On the other hand, it means that it is still glass and a splashing stone, a bird or an object can easily cause damage to the windscreen. In far from all cases, this is cause for panic, as in most cases you can simply continue driving with car window damage.
If the damage is in the driver's field of vision and is a branched crack or a chip at least two centimetres in diameter, the windscreen will need to be replaced. This windscreen damage is dangerous because it obstructs the view of the road, distracts while driving and can reflect incoming light (from the sun or headlights of your oncoming traffic) in unpredictable ways, which can cause glare.
In these cases, the windscreen must therefore be replaced. In all other cases, it's up to you to choose, but be sure to take a look at the price of a new Honda Civic windscreen before you make your choice, as the price will undoubtedly be much better than you think.
In fact, you already have a new Honda Civic windscreen for €299 (including VAT). However, be sure to check the model year of your Civic first, as the long list of generations and modifications have meant that there are numerous different windscreens available for this model. It is important that you order the right windscreen, otherwise the automotive glass simply cannot be fitted. If you cannot find the right windscreen or are in doubt, you can always contact us.
