The Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo GTV are striking models. Not only because they are beautiful Italian sporty cars, but also because these models have a long history. Many people think of the Alfa Romeo Spider as the models that went into production from 1993 (model year 1995) onwards, but the model is considerably older than that. Do you have one of the newer ones sitting in your driveway and needs its windscreen replaced? Then you can find new windscreens at a very attractive price, much cheaper than the original Alfa Romeo windscreens. Before we explain how this is possible, let's take a look at the Spider and the GTV together.
The original Alfa Romeo Spider was a 2-seater that went into production in 1966 and was only taken out of production in 1994, after quite a few modifications and generations. That means a production period of almost 30 years and this was not very strange, as the Spider was a popular model, partly because of its combination of a sporty appearance with an Italian look almost reminiscent of James Bond's cars. In total, some 125,000 were made before the curtain fell on the Alfa Romeo Spider in 1994.
When the new Alfa Romeo Spider and the Alfa Romeo GTV entered the market in 1993, they were given type number 916, indicating that these were new models. The GTV (Grand Turismo Veloce) became the successor to the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV and the Spider became the successor to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider. The GTV would remain in production until 2005 (succeeded by the Alfa Romeo Brera), the Spider followed a year later.
During design and development, the team at Alfa Romeo mainly looked to the sports coupé models of the early 1990s, and eventually a 1987 design would form the basis for the models.
In 1997, the GTV got a new engine (a 24-valve 3.0-litre V6), special wheels to accommodate the larger brakes and more colours became available for the seats, as did colours for the stitching.
A year later, both the Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo GTV received a major facelift, with a completely new dashboard, fresher and more modern interiors, and the engine range was refreshed in order to make the model more responsive to the market. This was done again in 2003 to allow the Spider and GTV to pass the Euro-3 standard.
The 2003 facelift did not represent as much. Here it was mainly the front end that was modified, looking a lot at the Alfa Romeo 147. As usual with Alfa Romeo, new engines were also introduced during this facelift, but it wouldn't be long before the curtain fell on both models, which had to make room for the all-new Brera.
With models like the Alfa Romeo Spider and the Alfa Romeo GTV, one cannot look at sales figures to determine whether the models were successful. These sports cars are in a niche market and also have a higher entry price. Still, we suspect that Alfa Romeo certainly considered the models to be great successes, as Jeremy Clarkson called the Alfa Romeo GTV one of the best sports cars at the time and both models won several awards, including Best Car to Drive (Auto Zeitung, 1995), Best Sports Car (Autocar Magazine, 1995) and Best Designed Car (Car Magazine, 1995).
Besides, you can easily see that Alfa Romeo was proud of these models. Put the usual Alfa Romeo advertisement to the spot below and you will immediately know that Alfa Romeo gave itself a pat on the back when the first examples drove out of the factories and towards the dealer.
The rules around the condition of the windscreen are strict, but only when it comes to the driver's field of vision, which is how you can tell if your windscreen needs replacing. The windscreen of your Alfa Romeo Spider or Alfa Romeo GTV should be replaced when there is damage in the driver's field of vision and this is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of 20 millimetres or more. This damage can distract while driving, obstruct your view of the road and it can cause incoming light (such as from the sun or the headlights of your oncoming traffic) to reflect unpredictably, which can cause sudden glare.
Is the windscreen damage in a different place? Then you may continue driving with a damaged windscreen in your Alfa Romeo. However, be sure to check out the price of a new windscreen below first, because getting your car back in optimum condition is considerably cheaper than you think.
In fact, you already have a new Alfa Romeo Spider/GTV windscreen for only € 299. This price includes VAT, but there is an additional cost for the windscreen moulding. This makes our windscreens much cheaper than those of the Alfa Romeo dealer, which is remarkable. After all, the quality is identical and the automotive glass is made in exactly the same way. The big price difference is hidden in a small brand logo that does nothing for the glass, but provides an exclusive character that is incorporated in the price. Since we do not use brand logos, our automotive glass is much cheaper. Often even cheaper than second-hand car windows.
