The Honda CR-V is one of the biggest successes of the Japanese car manufacturer, which responded to the demand for this particular type with the model. This created a huge sales success all over the world, where it would become one of the most popular models from Japan ever. If you have a CR-V whose windscreen needs replacing, then you have come to the right place. Before we tell you all about it, let's take a look at this hit from Honda to see how it managed to become such a huge success.
The Honda CR-V first hit the market in Japan in 1995 and was the first SUV that Honda designed entirely in-house. Only two years later, the first models entered the North American market and the Honda CR-V, initially placed on the platform of the Honda Civic, became an international model.
Interestingly, the name “CR-V” apparently has two meanings. Honda itself stated that it stands for “Comfortable Runabout Car”, but then used a car review from Britain that used the term “Compact Recreational Vehicle” as an explanation.
Back in 1999 (2000 model year) came a major facelift for all markets except those in North America. There were completely new bumpers, new colours and the European models got a significantly larger Honda emblem on the front. The models also got new engines (the 2.0-litre B20Z engine) that made the CR-V not only much stronger, but also more fuel-efficient. At the same time, a new version was introduced to the North American market, the Honda CR-V SE, which was more luxuriously equipped and thus was supposed to conquer the market. It did not succeed, as a year later, the Mazda Tribute topped the sales charts higher than the CR-V.
When the second generation entered the market in 2001, the model appeared to have been completely redesigned (using the seventh generation of the Honda Civic as a basis). This generation would form the basis of the CR-V's success, winning Best Small SUV twice (2002 and 2003), proclaimed by Car and Driver magazine. This generation would also become the basis of the Honda FR-V that would be launched in 2004.
The second generation received a facelift in 2004 (2005 model year), with numerous modifications specific to different markets. What was particularly noticeable was that more features were pumped into the model (audio controls on the steering wheel, an outside temperature gauge, satellite radio, to name a few) and the model was fitted with 16-inch rims, which made the look many times sportier.
The third generation of the Honda CR-V hit the market in North America in 2006 (2007 model year) and this time, much was carried over from the previous generation, but the interior and exterior were thoroughly updated. Also, from this point on, the CR-V got its own standard K-series 2.4-litre engine in North America, and a 2.2-litre i-CTDI diesel engine in Europe, in addition to the R20A 2.0 petrol engines.
In 2009 (2010 model year), the model received a minor facelift, with some design tweaks, but no major changes were made this time.
The same, incidentally, can be said about the fourth generation, which was fitted with a new AWD system, but other than that, the Honda CR-V saw fairly few major changes. During the facelift in 2015, it too seemed little changed, but thanks to major engine modifications, the model became considerably more fuel efficient and work was also done to improve safety, including modifications to the chassis of the car.
When the fifth generation was shown in Detroit in 2016, it was immediately clear that the CR-V had become significantly more modern and fresh, and was ready to continue its competitive edge. This is also when the CR-V went to the compact international platform (along with the Honda Civic), to bring the models more in line globally.
During the facelift that arrived at dealerships in 2019 (2020 model year), it was clear that Honda wanted the CR-V to be even more sleek and modern. This was evident at the exterior level, but also in terms of engine offerings. Indeed, the Honda CR-V showed up at dealerships for the first time as a hybrid (optional).
Then in 2022, the sixth generation of the Honda CR-V hit the market, the current generation at the time of writing. Once again, the CR-V was made even sleeker and more modern, and this generation was immediately marketed as a 5- and 7-seater (depending on the market).
The success of the Honda CR-V is hard to fathom. More than 10 million units have been made and sold since 1995 and the figure continues to rise by the day, as not only is this model still in production, it is also unprecedentedly popular. This is partly due to the fact that there are six trims available at the time of writing (LX, EX, Sport Hybrid, EX-L, Sport L-Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid), which allows a large part of the market to be served with one model.
We have retrieved one of the first, original advertisements for the Honda CR-V for you. Not because this advert says it all, shines in elegance or because it was the reason why all people went to the dealer for a new car, but mainly to show that Honda is good at making “unique” adverts for their car models.
Unobstructed visibility on the road is very important when it comes to safety, which is why there are strict rules when it comes to the condition of the windscreen. An intact, clean windscreen is always ideal, but that does not mean that the windscreen should be replaced for any kind of windscreen damage. On the contrary, as there are only two cases where you should not continue driving. These are damage in the driver's field of vision where there is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. In all other cases, you can choose to continue driving with the damaged window. However, be sure to look below at the price of a new Honda CR-V windscreen first when you choose us, as it is lower than you probably think right now.
You already have a new Honda CR-V windscreen for just €299, including VAT. However, be sure to check the model year of your CR-V first, because since there are differences between generations, this also means that there are different windscreens for this model.
Our automotive glass is considerably cheaper than the car windows at the Honda dealer, while the quality is identical. In fact, the car windows are often made in the same place, in exactly the same way. The difference in price lies in the brand logo incorporated in the original windscreens. This logo creates an exclusive character and therefore a higher price. Since we sell high-quality automotive glass without exclusive character, you can come to us for cheap car windows for Honda and all other car brands without compromising on quality.
If you are not sure if you can replace your car's windscreen yourself, the answer is no. Replacing a windscreen is a precise, extensive job where a lot can go wrong.
