When the Alfa Romeo Stelvio launched in 2016, it was by no means clear that it would be such a huge success. It seemed more like a slightly larger version than the Tonale and not much more than that, but the Stelvio would break records and even be Alfa Romeo's best-selling model for a year. In 2016, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio entered the market, a D-segment SUV that stood slightly higher in the market than the Alfa Romeo Tonale, and was placed on a raised Giogio platform (known from the Alfa Romeo Giulia). Alfa Romeo decided to use extra aluminium (including for the panels and mechanical parts such as the suspension, brakes and engine) to keep the weight of the model as low as possible.

In the period between 2019 and 2023, Alfa Romeo constantly continued to work on the Stelvio. Especially in terms of the engine range, partly because the diesel engines had to be updated to comply with the new Euro 6D guidelines regarding emissions. In 2023, Alfa Romeo tackled it bigger and both the Stelvio and the Giulia received a major facelift. Bi-xenon headlights were removed and replaced by the 3+3 headlights (first used on the Tonale), there was a completely new grille with different indicators, and the rear lights were also completely redesigned.
Alfa Romeo would also launch a number of special versions, mostly limited edition, such as the Quadrifoglio 100 Anniversary (100 examples) and the Quadrifoglio Carbon Edition (65 examples). Versions produced in larger editions included the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Intense, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Competizione and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Tributo Italiano.
There is a popular video available on the internet from Alfa Romeo showing the Giulia and the Stelvio driving side by side across a racetrack with some spectacular moves. The only thing that is particularly unfortunate about the clip below is that music has been placed over the sound of the cars.

When a pebble or other object hits the windscreen while driving or when the car is parked, it can cause windscreen damage.
