When it comes to Alfa Romeo classics, the Alfa Romeo 145 and Alfa Romeo 146 are must-haves. Not only because these models replaced a successful Italian car, but also because they both became big hits with dealers and on the second-hand car market. If you have an Alfa Romeo 145 or 146 and need to replace the windscreen, you have come to the right place if you want a high-quality car window at the lowest price. We will be happy to explain exactly how this works after we have first looked at these models and versions together.
When the end of the production period of the incredibly popular Alfa Romeo 33 was in sight, the designers and developers at Alfa Romeo had to work hard to create a new model that could follow in the footsteps of the 33. This took a total of more than four years, as the Alfa Romeo 145 was not launched until 1994, even though development of the model had started in 1990. The Alfa Romeo 146 was also due to be launched in 1994, but as it was the second model in the series, development took “only” two years.
Both models are small family cars that were marketed at an attractive price in order to claim a larger market share. From the B-pillars forward, the cars are identical; the major differences between the Alfa Romeo 145 and Alfa Romeo 146 can be found behind the B-pillars. The Alfa Romeo 145 is a 3-door model, while the Alfa Romeo 146 is a larger 5-door model.
In 1997, the first modifications to the models were made, with only Twin Spark 16-valve engines now being fitted under the bonnet of the new Alfa Romeo 145 and 146 models. They were also equipped with a new air conditioning system, optional sports seats and a new type, the Junior. This version was considerably sportier, but at the same time was equipped with the 1.4-litre engine, which meant that the models could be offered at a considerably lower price. This line was aimed at younger buyers.
In 1998, an update was made for the 1.8 and 2.0 Twin Spark engines. From this point on, the more powerful engines that had been introduced in the Alfa Romeo 156 would be chosen. A year later, another series of updates followed, including bumpers in new colours, a modified interior with more chrome and optional side airbags for increased safety. It is striking that the Junior line disappeared completely. It was replaced by a Pack Sport version that would make the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146 even sportier, for example with the choice of sports seats, a leather-covered steering wheel and aluminium rims.
In 2000, the Alfa Romeo 146 and Alfa Romeo 145 disappeared from the factories. They were replaced by the Alfa Romeo 147, which would become a greater sales success because much more attention had been paid to quality and design.
Does this mean that the Alfa Romeo 145 and Alfa Romeo 146 were not a great success? On the contrary, because for Alfa Romeo, the production numbers are remarkable. Respectively, 221,000 and 233,000 units were produced during this period, bringing the total production of this series to over 450,000, a remarkable achievement for the relatively small Italian car brand.
We have found the advertisement that was used to attract Dutch car buyers to the dealers in 1994, a good example of how car advertisements have changed in recent years:
And, to top it all off, the reason why many people are still looking for these models (especially with the Twin Spark engines):
Windscreen damage can be quite annoying and dangerous. However, not all cases of car windscreen damage are a problem, because in most cases you can simply continue driving with a damaged windscreen. This is not allowed if the damage is in the driver's field of vision and is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres. In that case, the windscreen of the Alfa Romeo 145 or 146 must be replaced, also because this will result in immediate failure of the MOT test. This is due to the risks involved. Windscreen damage in this location and of this size is highly distracting while driving, reduces visibility on the road and can cause incoming light to reflect in unpredictable ways, which can blind the driver while driving.
You can get a new Alfa Romeo 145/146 windscreen for €299. This price includes VAT and is considerably lower than the price of an original windscreen, while the quality is identical. This is because our replacement windscreens do not have an exclusive brand logo, so there is no need to factor exclusivity into the price. Since the price of our new car windows is often even lower than that of second-hand automotive glass, you can be sure that you can always come to us for automotive glass with the best price-quality ratio.
If you are unsure whether you can replace the windscreen of your Alfa Romeo 145 or Alfa Romeo 146 yourself, we strongly advise against attempting to do so.
