Replace the windscreen of your Honda Insight at a low cost

The Honda Insight was in production from 1999 to 2022 and underwent many changes during that period. The model became a reasonable success for Honda, after a modest start. Quite a few have been sold in Europe, and if you have an Insight that needs a windscreen replacement, you've come to the right place. Before we tell you how we can offer the cheapest new windscreens for the Honda Insight, let's take a closer look at this special model.

1999 (2000 model year): the first, striking generation of the Honda Insight

The first generation of the Honda Insight looked futuristic, partly because the body of the car went over the rear wheels and so there were no wheel wells for the rear axle. There are other notable facts about this model, as the Insight was also the first hybrid to be marketed in North America (followed six months later by the Toyota Prius).

The Insight was primarily designed to be as light as possible and to pay as much attention to aerodynamics as possible. This is well reflected in its fuel consumption, which is extremely low and which contributed greatly to the model's success (in terms of reputation). Something that has not helped the model is that there is no rear seat: the first generation was a 2-seater liftback. This is well reflected in the target versus actual sales. Honda expected to sell 6,500 units a year, but after seven years, only 17,000 units of the first generation had been sold, which was well below expectations and hopes.

2009: the second generation that looked more like a modern car

When the second generation hit the market in 2009 (2010 model year), it was clear that the futuristic design had been taken off the table and that the Insight would become a “normal” car. Honda also made it a 5-seater and the hybrid version received considerably more attention. Indeed, the aim with this model was to make hybrid driving affordable for the majority of car buyers, something that would incidentally lead to Toyota lowering the price of the Prius considerably for the third generation (although the Insight still remained cheaper).

Major facelift in 2012

In 2012, the second generation received a major facelift that would make the model much more modern and sleek. The exterior, interior, fuel economy and handling were all improved, partly to better market the model in North America, where the Prius remained supreme.

By the way, the modifications and efforts were not very successful. In 2009, the counter stood at around 130,500 units sold. At the same time, this did mark an important moment for Honda in the Dutch market, where the hybrid Honda Insight and the Honda Civic Hybrid combined to help Honda break the 1989 sales records.

2018: the third generation for the Honda Insight

In 2013 and 2014, sales of the Honda Insight were discontinued in several countries, partly because sales were slowly but surely heading towards zero. It was not until 2018 that Honda showed the third generation of the Honda Insight, an attempt to revive the model. This generation was based on the tenth generation of the Honda Civic, which would make it a traditional sedan rather than a liftback.

Incidentally, Honda borrowed from more models, as the LCD instrument panel was taken directly from the Honda Accord (2008 model year), but soon realised that the third generation would not be a great success either. Therefore, the Japanese ceased production in 2022 and opted to launch a new Honda Civic Hybrid to fill the gap.

How successful has the Honda Insight become?

The Honda Insight has been an important model for Honda working hard on the transition to electric driving, but that is not reflected in its sales figures (unless you look at the Japanese market). Competition from the Toyota Prius, the too futuristic design of the first generation and the lack of seats, it all combined to ensure that the model never really took off.

In the Netherlands, this picture is different, which is mainly due to the early interest in electric driving. Here, the Insight is sixth on Honda's list of best-selling models, just behind the Honda Prelude and the Honda CR-V, while it manages to stay well ahead of the Honda HR-V and Honda Concerto. Not bad for a model that entered the market mainly as a hybrid.

What is also not bad was that Honda thought it was time for a cheeky advert. We say nothing further about it and leave the judgement to you.

When should the windscreen of the Honda Insight be replaced?

Road safety starts with an intact, clean windscreen. However, since the windscreen is simply made of two layers of glass with a layer of PVB film
in between, it is not nearly as obvious that the windscreen is intact. A splashing stone can be enough to damage the windscreen, but in which cases should the windscreen actually be replaced? That is in cases of damage in the driver's field of vision involving a branched crack or a chip at least 20 millimetres in diameter. In these cases, you should no longer use the car because the damage is distracting while driving and incoming light can be reflected in an unpredictable way, leading to glare.

In all other cases, you may continue driving with the windscreen damage, but above all, check out the price of a new Honda Insight windscreen with us before driving on with a damaged windscreen.

What does a new Honda Insight windscreen cost?

Because you already have a new Honda Insight windscreen for just €399 and that includes VAT. That means our automotive glass is much cheaper than the car windows offered by the Honda dealer, while the quality is identical. In fact, the windscreens are made in exactly the same way. Our replacement windscreens for the Honda Insight are so much cheaper because we do not have a brand logo in the glass that ensures exclusivity, which is then charged to your wallet.

Specifically, with us you can always count on automotive glass with the best value for money. Our products are so cheap that our car windows are often even cheaper than second-hand automotive glass, which makes it very logical to choose us.

Can you replace the windscreen of your Honda Insight yourself?

We like to cut costs, especially when we can do something ourselves instead of outsourcing. When it comes to windscreen replacement, the story becomes different. After all, this is not something you can do yourself if you have little or no experience in replacing car windows. Even a small mistake can cause the new windscreen to be damaged or the car to be damaged while replacing the windscreen. That is why we cooperate with professional fitting partners who replace windscreens on-site, so that you do not have to worry about it at all.

Can you replace the windscreen yourself or do you know someone who can replace the windscreen of your Honda Insight? Then simply indicate during the ordering process that you only want a windscreen and no fitting.
