Groningen, or the City, is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. For centuries it has played an incredibly important role for the northern parts of the Netherlands, which were far away from power centers such as Utrecht and Breda. Even today, Groningen is still one of the most important cities in the north and is experiencing steady growth, thanks in part to the large number of students.
In Groningen you can visit the Grote Markt, the Vismarkt, the beautiful Noorderplantsoen, the museum and you can have a car window replacement in Groningen by the largest online automotive glass expert in the Netherlands. Before we get into that, let's take a look at the home town of the Stadjers.
Groningen has a long history, most of which has actually been fairly autonomous. In the fifteenth century, the power of the city of Groningen was so great that historians even state that the city was virtually an independent city-state. Unfortunately, this came to an end after the French occupation and the power shifted to the western part of the Netherlands. It is the reason why Groningen is called 'Stad' (City) in the province and in the north of Drenthe, where also the name 'Stadjers' comes from as inhabitants of Groningen-City. By the way, many Groningers have a pet name for Groningen; Groot Loug (big village).
Groningen played an important role in the network of Hanseatic cities, but fairly quickly developed into a major player in the regional trade network. Currently, Groningen is still the largest sugar city in Europe; this provides the necessary employment.
However, the real employment comes from education. The University of Groningen and the Hanzehogeschool provide a steady influx of students to the city, which also directly creates employment. Although Groningen is truly a student city, especially at night, the city has managed to retain its own character outside the inner city.
Groningen is characterized by the alternation of old architecture and new construction. This is partly due to the consequences of the Second World War and in particular the liberation, during which the Canadians and the Germans came face to face. Large parts of Groningen, including the Grote Markt, were left in ruins. A great miracle was that the Martinitoren, on the corner of the Grote Markt, came out of the battle unscathed (only the guardhouse was destroyed).
Along the Grote Markt you can still find a number of old buildings; along the Vismarkt, however, the number of old buildings is considerably larger. Via the Vismarkt and Grote Markt you can easily get to the shopping street, or the Poelestraat where you can find numerous pubs and eateries. If you go the other way, via the Oude Boteringestraat, you can walk to the Noorderplantsoen.
Coming to Groningen by train? Then walk away from the station, past the Groningen Museum (which has grown from a regional museum to a large and renowned museum in the Netherlands), and keep walking straight ahead. You will then pass over the Vismarkt (Albert Heijn on your left), and then come to two imposing buildings of the University of Groningen. Again, if you keep walking you will end up in the Noorderplantsoen.
If you prefer to come to Groningen by car, it is good to know that you can hardly get to the center by car. It is wiser to follow the ring road and choose one of the parking lots or parking garages, which are well signposted. A very popular parking option is the IKEA parking lot. From there, a bus will take you to the center of the city.
You can also walk from IKEA to the city center quite easily. If you come back with a lot of bags, you can always take the bus from the Grote Markt.
If you drive to Groningen via the A7 or A28 motorways or use the ring road, it is possible that a stone will hit your windscreen and cause damage. It can also happen that you return to your car and find that a window has been smashed, or you yourself smash the rear window by the slightly too large box from the IKEA.
When it comes to windscreen damage, it's good to look at the extent of the damage. A chip in the windscreen with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or a branched crack means a refusal to pass the MOT test. A shattered rear or side window should of course always be replaced immediately. If one of your car windows in Groningen needs to be replaced, you can simply leave it to us. Replacing your car window on location is always possible in the Netherlands and Belgium. So you can call us in when your car is at the IKEA, but you can also drive back home and have your car window replaced in Almere, or at the parking lot in Utrecht.
With us, you will only find automotive glass with the best price-quality ratio. Our car windows are identical to those at the brand dealer, with one small difference that explains the big price difference. This is because our automotive glass does not bear the brand logo, which means that it lacks an exclusive character. As a result, we can always surprise our customers with particularly attractive prices. Even when you need to replace your truck windscreen!
If you choose for our car windows, we will make sure that our certified fitting partners replace your car window in Groningen, regardless of whether your car is parked at the Damsterdiep, at the IKEA, in your driveway or in the parking lot of your work. Select and order the desired window through the website and we will make sure that you will have a completely new car window fitted in your car within a short period of time.
