If you know considerably about World War II, then Operation Market Garden probably sounds familiar to you. It was part of the Battle of Arnhem, in which the last bridge in particular was the stake, but the Allies failed. As a result, the western part of the Netherlands could not be liberated, which then had to deal with the infamous hunger winter of '44-'45.
In Arnhem you will find many monuments related to the battlefields of 1944. The Airborne Museum is highly recommended for history enthusiasts, as it was the largest operation on Dutch soil during the Second World War. Since the Battle of Arnhem, however, the city has not had to worry about tourism. Thousands of people come to Arnhem every year, mostly for that one bridge.
