The Honda S2000 is not just another model from Japan. It is a statement, it is pandering to the design team's desire and the result is arguably the best Honda ever made. The history of the Honda S2000 starts back in 1995, when the concept car SSM was shown, a model that sought to go back to the S500, S600 and the S800 roadsters of the 1960s. The concept car was well received and the design team decided to make few changes towards the Honda S2000.
The Honda S2000 entered the market in 1999 as an open-top sports car and was immediately known for its incredible power output of 124 hp per litre, which made it a beast on the road. In 2003 (2004 model year), the second generation entered the market, with some bigger modifications. First, the suspension was modified to counteract oversteer, as were the shock absorbers to provide more stable handling. The frame was also made more rigid, which mainly contributed to tighter cornering. Larger engines were also chosen for the US market, ensuring that the models there would be even stronger.
To add to the sporty character of the S2000, Honda also went to work on the gear layout. The first five gears were all shortened and the sixth became significantly longer.
When the end of the production period was in sight, Honda decided to release special S2000 models to celebrate the success. 100 special GT Edition models were released for Britain, along with the S2000 Ultimate Edition for the rest of Europe. These models featured a Grand Prix white colour for the body, a hard top (which could be removed) and leather interior with red stitching for the gear lever.
110,673 copies of the Honda S2000 were made and with a production period of 10 years, that is not something to be happy about. Unless it is a model like the S2000, because its success is not in the sales figures. It is in Honda's pride, the reputation of its design team and the way the S2000 is made. In fact, Honda's design team did not take advice from the marketing team when making the S2000, for an obvious reason. They didn't want this to be a car made to the wishes of car buyers, otherwise it would become yet another “standard car” and there were already plenty of those. The S2000 had to be a true Honda and truly unique car.
Therefore, the team stayed true to the concept car, which in turn stayed true to Honda's original ideas from the 1960s.
