The Fiat 124 itself would only be in production for a few years, but would have considerable impact on the car market with numerous sales successes under other names. In 1966, the Fiat 124 fell from the sky. Literally, because as part of its marketing, the first model parachuted out of a plane. Just a year later, the small family car was named car of the year in Europe, something that was partly due to its diverse range of versions, including the 5-door (estate) and the Sport Spider (convertible), both of which would remain in production longer than the Fiat 124 itself.
The Sport Coupé and the Sport Spider were popular models and this would eventually result in the arrival of the new Fiat 124 Spider in 2016, 50 years after the original models. It should be mentioned here that although the original 124 went out of production in 1974, the Sport Spider would continue to roll out of the factories until 1985.
This could have been a tremendous success, but it definitely did not become one. Indeed, just over 41,000 units were made in the entire production period and this is mainly due to the fact that the new Fiat 124 Spider lost out in every way to the Mazda MX-5, which is actually the model on which the new Spider is based, according to Jeremy Clarkson, who gave the model a particularly bad name as a result. In 2019, the model was therefore withdrawn from production and Fiat had to admit that the new 124 Spider had only managed to exacerbate the car manufacturer's financial distress.
At the same time, Fiat has made no secret of the carmaker's pride in the model, something that was again evident in the advertisements for the new Fiat 124 Spider, with the whole old box being pulled empty.
Damage in the windscreen can be incredibly annoying and that's exactly why there are strict rules around driving with windscreen damage. The windscreen of your Fiat 124 should be replaced when there is damage in the driver's field of vision, but only when it is a branched crack or a chip with a diameter of 2 centimetres or more. This can cause dangerous situations and therefore the car with this damage will be rejected at the next MOT.
In all other cases, you can continue driving with the windscreen damage, although you are unlikely to want to do this to your Fiat 124. After all, a classic like this deserves an intact, clean windscreen, and when you choose us, it doesn't even have to cost that much.
