Cheap windscreen replacement for your Volvo 240

The Volvo 240 has been a resounding success for Volvo, breaking all sales records. Currently, this model is still the record holder and one of the most favourite 'winter cars' among the younger generations. Not only did Volvo manage to put itself in the spotlight, the 240 would also become the forerunner of numerous other successes from Sweden.

Do you have a 240 whose windscreen needs to be replaced or do you have your eye on a second-hand Volvo 240 with chipped windscreen? Then with us you will always find new windscreens with the best value for money. But before we delve deeper into this, let's give the model, which only saw the curtain fall on 7 May 1993, the space it deserves.

Volvo's best-selling model of all time

When it comes to the biggest successes for Volvo, it is almost always about Norwegian Jan Wilsgaard, or his successor Peter Horbury (also known from the Premier Automotive Group who designed models for Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and numerous Volvo models). These two designers have designed Volvo's best, most iconic and now legendary models. We owe both the Volvo 140 and the Volvo 240 to Jan Wilsgaard,
with the latter model having sold nearly 3 million units (2.8) worldwide. This makes this model the absolute list leader in terms of the Swedish company's successes.

The models are still popular on the second-hand market now, decades after the last model rolled out of the factory. Especially the younger Swedish generation always knows how to pick up a Volvo 240 somewhere, because the combination of snow, ice and rear-wheel drive is simply too attractive to pass up in a country where it is winter half the year.

Volvo 242, Volvo 244, Volvo 245 or just the Volvo 240?

The Volvo 240 was in production from 1974 to 1993 and replaced the Volvo 140 that had been in production from 1966 to 1974. Although the 240 was expected to be a straight continuation of the 140 series, Volvo decided otherwise and launched a new design. What was particularly confusing was the huge number of type numbers the 240 was given. Below are the most common type numbers with a brief explanation, so you know exactly what Volvo had in mind:

  • Volvo 242: 2-door version of the Volvo 240
  • Volvo 244: 4-door version of the Volvo 240
  • Volvo 245: combi version of the Volvo 240

In 1983, Volvo decided to throw all the different type numbers out of the window and continue to offer the model exclusively as the Volvo 240. However, many car enthusiasts continued to use the different designations until 1993 to make it immediately clear which bodywork they have in the driveway (or as a hobby project in the garage).

Even the Volvo 740 didn't get the 240 off the market

In 1984, the Volvo 740 was introduced and many a Volvo enthusiast feared this would be the end of the 240, which would have been the usual state of affairs. However, the Swedish carmaker did not turn its back on the success number and allowed production to continue until 1993. This meant that the Volvo 240 not only outlived the Volvo 740 (production of that model stopped in 1992) but even saw the Volvo 940 built alongside it in its factories.

The Volvo 240 now has cult status, but did not have this at all during its production years. On the contrary, there was no car more standard, common and average than the Volvo 240 that dominated the streetscape in Sweden for decades and is now taken out on cold winter days to 'let the engine warm up'. The 240's successors became the Volvo 850 and the Volvo 760 (successor to the Volvo 260).

When should the windscreen of the Volvo 240 be replaced?

Although car window damage is always annoying, damage in the windscreen by no means always means that the automotive glass needs to be replaced. In some cases you can suffice with windscreen repair and in other cases no action is required at all. The windscreen of your Volvo 240 does need to be replaced when there is a chip with a diameter of at least 20 millimetres or a branched crack and the damage is within the driver's field of vision.

In all other cases, you can simply continue driving a chipped windscreen. However, is the car used as a winter car and do you regularly drive with the heating on full blast? Then the window may crack further, in which case it is wise to check the size of the chip or crack regularly to avoid problems while driving.

What does a new Volvo 240 windscreen cost?

You already have a new Volvo 240 windscreen for €249 (excluding new clips). This is significantly cheaper than the price your Volvo dealer charges you, while the quality of our automotive glass is identical. The price difference has to do with the brand logo that is in your dealer's branded windscreens. That logo does nothing for the automotive glass, but does make the journey exclusive and therefore more expensive. Our automotive glass is so competitively priced that our Volvo 240 windscreens are even cheaper than used automotive glass for the 240.

Are you looking for automotive glass with the best value for money, or do you want to replace your windscreen as cheaply as possible because your car insurance does not cover it? Then you have always come to the right place.
